The Finger Trick for the 9 Times Table
- Hold up both hands, fingers spread, palms facing you.
- To multiply 9 by a number n, fold down finger number n (counting from the left).
- Count the fingers left standing before the fold — that's the tens digit.
- Count the fingers left standing after the fold — that's the ones digit.
It works because 9 = 10 − 1, so 9×n is always "n tens, minus n" — the fingers just track that subtraction visually.
Why this matters more than flashcards
Kids who understand why 9 × n behaves this way can figure out 9 × 13 later on too — because they understand the pattern, not just a party trick for single digits. That's the difference between a gimmick and real number sense.
