Money Math: Shopping, Saving, and Making Change

Money is the most naturally motivating math there is — kids who won't sit through a worksheet will happily figure out if they have enough for candy. Use that.

Biggest Coins First

  1. Sort or count from the biggest coin value down to the smallest (quarters, then dimes, then nickels, then pennies).
  2. Skip count each group by its value, then add the group totals.
Example: 3 quarters, 2 dimes, 4 pennies → 75 + 20 + 4 = 99 cents.

Counting biggest-to-smallest avoids losing track and mirrors exactly how a cashier counts a drawer.

Making change (or checking that you got the right change)

Count Up to the Amount Paid

  1. Start at the price, and count upward — in coins and bills — until you reach the amount handed over.
  2. Each thing you "add" out loud is a piece of the change.
Example: Item costs $3.65, you pay with a $5 bill. Count up: 3.65 → 3.70 (nickel) → 4.00 (a quarter) → 5.00 (a dollar). Change: $1.35.

This was the standard way cashiers made change for decades — it needs no subtraction at all, just counting up in convenient jumps.

Deciding if you have enough money for several items

Round Every Price Up, Then Add

  1. Round each price up to the next dollar (or 50 cents).
  2. Add the rounded prices — if that rounded-up total still fits your budget, you're safely covered.
Example: Items cost $2.35, $4.80, and $1.10. Round up to $3, $5, $2 = $10. If you have $10 or more, you're covered — no exact math needed at the register.

Rounding up (instead of to the nearest dollar) guarantees you never underestimate, which matters more than being exact when the goal is just "can I afford this."

Saving toward a goal

Work Backward From the Goal

  1. Divide the total goal by how much you can save each week (or month).
  2. That tells you exactly how many weeks it will take.
Example: Saving for a $45 video game, putting away $5/week → 45 ÷ 5 = 9 weeks.

This is a real-life division word problem that kids actually care about the answer to — a great way to make division "click."

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: Counting a mixed pile of coins smallest-first (pennies, then nickels, then dimes, then quarters), losing track of the running total partway through.

Why it happens: Counting small numbers first feels like starting simple, but it means constantly recalculating bigger jumps later instead of building smoothly toward the total.

The fix: Always sort biggest value to smallest before counting, and count each group's running total out loud as you go.

Real-World Use

Where this shows up outside school

An allowance, a lemonade stand, a wish-list item, or splitting the cost of a pizza with friends are money-math problems kids encounter on their own — and they're often more motivated to solve these than any worksheet problem.
