We don't teach math the traditional way — we teach it the way that works.
Every trick on this site had to earn its spot. If a method is slower, harder to remember, or never comes up outside a classroom, we leave it out — no matter how standard it is.
Our four filters for "best method"
1. Is it fast?
Can a kid do this in their head, in a few seconds, without paper? If a strategy needs a full page of steps to beat guessing, it's not fast enough for us.
2. Is it memorable?
Tricks that connect to something visual or physical (fingers, patterns, benchmarks like 10, 25, 100) stick. Tricks that are just "steps to memorize" don't — so we avoid teaching those in isolation.
3. Does it transfer?
A good shortcut should still work when the numbers change. We always explain why a trick works, so it generalizes instead of breaking on the next problem.
4. Does it show up in real life?
Splitting a bill, doubling a recipe, estimating a grocery total, converting a race time — if a skill doesn't appear outside of a worksheet, we deprioritize it in favor of ones that do.
What we skip (on purpose)
None of these are "bad" — they're just not the fastest or most useful path for most kids, so we don't lead with them.
- Timed drills with no strategy. Repetition without a mental model builds speed on exactly the facts practiced and nothing else. We'd rather teach a strategy that covers dozens of facts at once (like doubling, or working from 10s).
- Long written algorithms as the only method. Standard long division and column subtraction are useful backups for big, messy numbers — but for the numbers kids actually encounter day to day, mental strategies are faster and build better number sense. We teach both, but we lead with the mental version.
- Memorizing rules without the reason. "Flip and multiply" for fraction division works, but a kid who doesn't know why will forget it by summer. We always attach the "why" in plain language.
- Word problems with no real context. "Trains leaving stations" problems are a meme for a reason. We use money, sports stats, recipes, and screen time instead — contexts kids actually reason about already.
What we emphasize instead
Benchmark numbers
Rounding to friendly numbers like 10, 25, 50, and 100 and adjusting — the single most useful mental-math habit at every grade level.
Number relationships
Doubling/halving, breaking numbers into tens and ones, and using known facts (like 5×5) to find unknown ones (like 6×5).
Visual & physical anchors
Finger tricks, number lines, ten-frames, and area models — because seeing or touching a quantity beats abstract memorization for most kids.
Everyday contexts
Money, cooking, sports, and shopping are the four contexts we return to again and again, because they're the ones kids already care about.
