Memorize a Few Anchors, Derive the Rest

  1. Learn these by heart: 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%, 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, 1/10 = 0.1 = 10%, 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%.
  2. Build other values from these — e.g. 3/4 is three lots of 1/4 (75%).

Every percent problem gets faster once these five anchors are automatic — most real-world percentages (discounts, tips) are built from combinations of them.

Finding any percentage of a number

Start From 10%

  1. Move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the number.
  2. Multiply or add copies of that 10% to build the percent you need.
Example: 40% of 65 → 10% of 65 = 6.5. 40% = 4 × 6.5 = 26.

This turns any percentage into repeated addition of an easy-to-find chunk, without needing a calculator or a memorized proportion formula.

Adding or subtracting decimals

Line Up the Decimal Points

  1. Stack the numbers so the decimal points are directly above one another.
  2. Add zeros to fill in any missing decimal places.
  3. Add or subtract as normal, keeping the decimal point in the same column.
Example: 3.6 + 12.75 → line up as 3.60 and 12.75 → 16.35.

The most common decimal mistake is misaligning place value. Lining up the points first prevents that entirely.

Estimating a tip or sales tax

Tip Math: Double 10% (or Halve for 5%)

  1. Find 10% of the bill by moving the decimal point.
  2. Double it for a 20% tip, or halve the 10% for a 5% tip and combine as needed.
Example: Bill is $42. 10% = $4.20. A 20% tip is 2 × $4.20 = $8.40. A 15% tip is $4.20 + $2.10 = $6.30.

This is genuinely how most adults calculate tips in their head — it's the 10%-scaling trick applied to money, which is exactly why it belongs here.

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: Adding 3.6 + 12.75 by lining up the digits on the right like whole numbers, getting something like 3.96 instead of 16.35.

Why it happens: Whole-number addition lines up on the right edge, but decimals need to line up on the decimal point instead — a genuinely different rule that's easy to apply the old way from muscle memory.

The fix: Always rewrite both numbers with the same number of decimal places first (pad with zeros), stacking the decimal points directly above each other before adding a single digit.

Real-World Use

Where this shows up outside school

Calculating a restaurant tip, figuring out a 30%-off sale price, reading a batting average (a decimal), or understanding a discount coupon are all decimal-and-percent skills used constantly by adults — often without realizing it's "school math."
