  2. Multiply every single ingredient amount by that same factor — fractions included.

Time Budgeting With Addition and Subtraction

  1. List each activity's length.
  2. Add them up against a total available time (a day, an afternoon, a trip) to see what fits.
Example: You have 90 minutes of screen time. A show is 22 minutes and a game session you want is 50 minutes → 22 + 50 = 72, leaving 18 minutes to spare.

What it looks like: Comparing two deals by looking at total price alone — assuming the bigger pack is always the better deal, or the smaller number is always cheaper.

Why it happens: Total price is the number that's easiest to see on a shelf tag, so it's tempting to compare it directly even when package sizes are different.

The fix: Always divide to find the price per unit (per ounce, per item) before comparing two different-sized options — total price only compares fairly when the sizes already match.

Narrate math out loud when you do it in front of your kids — "let me check the unit price," "I'm estimating the tip," "let's see how many boxes we need." Kids learn that math is a tool adults use constantly, not a subject that ends at 3pm.
