First grade is where kids either learn to see numbers as flexible tools — or start memorizing facts one at a time. These four strategies do more work than any flashcard deck.

Counting On (Start Big)

  1. Find the bigger number in the problem.
  2. Start there, and count up by the smaller number using fingers or a number line.
Example: 3 + 8 → start at 8, count up 3: "9, 10, 11." Answer: 11.

Counting from 1 every time is slow and error-prone. Starting from the bigger number cuts the counting in half or more.

Adding numbers that are close together

Doubles and Doubles-Plus-One

  1. Memorize just the doubles: 1+1, 2+2, 3+3 … up to 5+5 (these are easy to picture — two hands, two feet).
  2. For a problem one away from a double, use the double and adjust by one.
Example: 4 + 5 is "double 4, plus 1" → 8 + 1 = 9.

This turns 10+ separate facts into 5 doubles plus a one-step adjustment — far less to remember.

Adding a number to 8 or 9

Make a Ten First

  1. Break the second number into a piece that completes ten, plus what's left over.
  2. Add up to 10, then add the leftover piece.
Example: 8 + 5 → 8 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 3 = 13.

Ten is the easiest number to add to. This single habit is the foundation for every mental-math trick in later grades.

Recognizing small quantities instantly

  1. Picture (or draw) a 2-row, 5-box grid.
  2. Fill boxes left to right, top row first — this is how many kids' worksheets already show numbers.
  3. A full top row is an instant "5," which makes counting on from 5 automatic.
Example: Seeing 7 as "a full row of 5, plus 2" makes 7 + 3 obvious: 2 more fills the second row (10), plus 1 leftover... but really it just means 7 is "nearly 10."
⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: A child recounts from 1 every single time, even for something like 9 + 2, or loses track partway through counting on.

Why it happens: Counting from zero feels "safer" than trusting a shortcut, especially under pressure — but it's slow and easy to lose your place in.

The fix: Practice counting on from a few different starting numbers using fingers or objects until starting mid-sequence feels as natural as starting from 1.

Real-World Use

Where this shows up outside school

Counting out snacks for friends, figuring out how many more minutes until a favorite show, or splitting stickers evenly all use "counting on" and "making ten" without a worksheet in sight. Point these moments out loud — "you just did math!" — and the strategy sticks.
