Counting groups of things quickly

Skip Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

  1. Instead of counting one at a time, count in jumps that match how objects are grouped.
  2. Pairs of shoes or socks → count by 2s. Nickels or fingers-and-toes → count by 5s. Dimes or fingers → count by 10s.
Example: 6 nickels → "5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30" cents, instead of counting to 30 one cent at a time.

This is the direct ancestor of multiplication — a kid who skip-counts fluently is already halfway to knowing their times tables.

Adding two 2-digit numbers in your head

Break Apart Tens and Ones

  1. Split each number into tens and ones.
  2. Add the tens together, add the ones together, then combine.
Example: 34 + 28 → (30 + 20) + (4 + 8) = 50 + 12 = 62.

This mirrors exactly how place value works, so it builds the number sense needed for every bigger calculation later.

Subtracting a number close to a multiple of ten (like 19, 29, 41)

Compensation: Round, Then Fix It

  1. Round the number you're subtracting up to the nearest ten.
  2. Subtract the rounder, easier number.
  3. Add back the small amount you rounded by.
Example: 52 − 19 → think 52 − 20 = 32, then add back 1 (since 19 is 1 less than 20) → 33.

Subtracting round numbers is much easier than subtracting awkward ones — this trick turns any "ugly" subtraction into a clean one plus a tiny adjustment.

Reading an analog clock

The Clock Is Just Skip Counting by 5

  1. Each number on the clock face stands for 5 minutes, not 1.
  2. Skip count by 5s around the clock from 12 to find the minutes: 12→0, 1→5, 2→10 … up to 11→55.
Example: The minute hand points at the 7 → 7 × 5 = 35 minutes past the hour.

Kids who already skip count by 5s can read any clock instantly — no separate memorization needed.

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: When subtracting like 52 − 19, a child rounds 19 up to 20 but forgets to add the 1 back at the end, landing on 32 instead of 33.

Why it happens: The "round and fix" trick has two steps, and the second one (adjusting back) is easy to skip when a kid is excited to have an answer.

The fix: Always ask out loud: "did I round up or down, and did I fix it back the opposite way?" Saying the fix step out loud turns it into a habit.

Real-World Use

Counting change at a lemonade stand, figuring out how many more minutes until leaving for school, or splitting a bag of 24 pretzels into groups of 2 all use these exact strategies. Let your child count real coins and read a real clock — it's more convincing than any worksheet.
