Adding any two numbers

Round to a Friendly Number, Then Adjust

  1. Round one number up or down to the nearest ten (or hundred, for bigger numbers).
  2. Add the rounded, easy number.
  3. Add or subtract the small amount you rounded by.
Example: 48 + 37 → round 48 up to 50 (add 2). 50 + 37 = 87. Subtract the 2 back → 85.

This is the single most useful mental-math habit at any age — it turns almost any addition into round-number addition plus a tiny fix.

Subtracting two numbers

Count Up From the Smaller Number

  1. Instead of subtracting directly, ask "how far is it from the smaller number to the bigger one?"
  2. Count up in easy jumps — to the next ten, then in tens, then the last bit.
Example: 82 − 47 → from 47 to 50 is 3. From 50 to 80 is 30. From 80 to 82 is 2. Total: 3 + 30 + 2 = 35.

This is exactly how cashiers make change — and it avoids borrowing/regrouping entirely, which is where most subtraction mistakes happen.

Adding a list of numbers, or numbers ending in 9 or 8

Add 10 (or the round number), Then Subtract the Difference

  1. For any number ending in 9, add 10 instead, then subtract 1.
  2. For a number ending in 8, add 10 then subtract 2. And so on.
Example: 56 + 29 → add 30 (56+30=86), then subtract 1 → 85.

Adding round tens is nearly instant. This trick turns any "9-heavy" or "8-heavy" addition into round addition plus a one-digit correction.

Multiplying or dividing by 2, or splitting something evenly

Doubling and Halving

  1. To multiply by 4, double twice. To multiply by 8, double three times.
  2. To divide by 4, halve twice. Doubling one number and halving the other in a multiplication keeps the answer the same — use that to make ugly numbers friendlier.
Example: 35 × 4 → double 35 (70), double again (140). Or: 16 × 25 → double 16 to 32, halve 25 to 12.5... instead, halve 16 to 8, double 25 to 50 → 8 × 50 = 400.

Doubling is one of the easiest operations for the brain — building bigger multiplications out of repeated doubling avoids memorizing extra facts.

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: Rounding a number up to make the math easier, but forgetting to subtract the extra amount back off at the end — e.g. 48 + 37 → rounding 48 to 50, getting 87, and stopping there instead of 85.

Why it happens: The rounding step feels like the whole trick, so the "undo" step at the end gets skipped once the easier addition is done.

The fix: Treat it as a two-part move every time: round, then always ask "which way, and by how much do I need to fix it back?" before calling it done.

Adding up a grocery cart total as you shop, figuring change owed at a yard sale, or splitting the cost of gas for a road trip all rely on these exact habits — round, adjust, and count up. Adults who are "fast" at math in their head are almost always just using these tricks automatically.
