Reading the minutes on an analog clock

Every Number Is a 5-Minute Jump

  1. Skip count by 5s around the clock face: 12→0, 1→5, 2→10 … 11→55.
  2. The number the minute hand points to, times 5, is the minutes past the hour.
Example: Minute hand on the 9 → 9 × 5 = 45 minutes past the hour.

This turns clock-reading into a skip-counting fact kids already know, instead of a separate memorization task.

Figuring out elapsed time (how long between two clock times)

Jump to the Nearest Hour First

  1. Count the minutes from the start time up to the next whole hour.
  2. Count the full hours from there to the hour just before the end time.
  3. Count the remaining minutes to the end time.
  4. Add all three pieces together.
Example: From 2:40 to 5:15 → 2:40 to 3:00 is 20 min. 3:00 to 5:00 is 2 hours. 5:00 to 5:15 is 15 min. Total: 20 + 120 + 15 = 2 hours 35 minutes.

Subtracting clock times directly causes constant borrowing errors (60 minutes in an hour, not 100). Jumping through whole hours avoids that math entirely.

Converting between units (inches/feet, minutes/hours, cups/gallons)

Multiply to Go Small-to-Big-Count, Divide to Go Big-to-Small-Count

  1. Know the key conversion number (12 inches/foot, 60 minutes/hour, 16 cups/gallon, 1000 grams/kilogram).
  2. Going from a bigger unit to a smaller one (more of them) → multiply.
  3. Going from a smaller unit to a bigger one (fewer of them) → divide.
Example: How many minutes in 3.5 hours? 3.5 × 60 = 210 minutes. How many hours is 150 minutes? 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours.

Once the direction rule (bigger unit → smaller pieces means multiply) is automatic, every unit conversion uses the exact same two-step process.

Estimating how long a trip or task will take

Round the Rate, Round the Amount

  1. Round speed or pace to a friendly number.
  2. Use distance ÷ speed (or amount ÷ rate) with the rounded numbers for a fast estimate.
Example: Driving 245 miles at about 60 mph → round to 240 ÷ 60 = about 4 hours.

Exact answers rarely matter for planning purposes — a fast, close estimate is more useful than a slow exact one, and it's a real skill adults use for travel and cooking.

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

What it looks like: Finding elapsed time by subtracting clock times like whole numbers — e.g. 5:15 − 2:40 becomes 3:25 by borrowing wrong, or a straight (but incorrect) 2:75.

Why it happens: A clock isn't base-10 — there are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100 — so standard subtraction borrowing rules don't apply directly.

The fix: Skip subtraction entirely and jump forward instead: count up from the start time to the next whole hour, then in whole hours, then the final leftover minutes.

Real-World Use

Where this shows up outside school

Figuring out what time to leave to arrive somewhere on time, converting a recipe's cook time when doubling it, or calculating how many days until a birthday all use these time-and-measurement habits directly.

6:50 to 7:00 is 10 min (leaves 2h 15m). 7:00 + 2h = 9:00. 9:00 + 15m = 9:15pm.
