Word Problem Strategies (That Aren't Keyword Hunting)
Word problems don't require a new kind of math — they require translating a story into the math you already know. These strategies build that translation skill.

Retell the Problem in Your Own Words
- Cover the numbers and re-read just the story.
- Say out loud what's happening, in your own simple sentence, before touching a single number.
Kids who jump straight to circling numbers and hunting for keywords (like assuming "left" always means subtract) get fooled by problems where that shortcut fails. Understanding the story first prevents that.
Swap in Tiny, Friendly Numbers
- Replace the problem's numbers with very small ones (like 2 and 3).
- Solve the simplified version to see which operation the story actually needs.
- Redo the problem with the real numbers, using that same operation.
Big or oddly-shaped numbers can obscure a problem's structure. Tiny numbers make the correct operation obvious, and the structure of the problem doesn't change when the numbers do.
Find the Question Last, Work the Sub-Answers First
- Underline the actual question being asked (usually the last sentence).
- List each smaller fact you'll need to find before you can answer it.
- Solve those smaller pieces first, one at a time.
Multi-step problems overwhelm kids when they try to do everything at once. Breaking the question into a checklist of smaller answers turns one hard problem into several easy ones.
Sanity-Check with an Estimate
- Before solving exactly, guess roughly what size the answer should be.
- After solving, compare your exact answer to that estimate — if they're wildly different, recheck your work.
This single habit catches the majority of word-problem errors (wrong operation, misplaced decimal) without needing to redo the whole problem.
What it looks like: Grabbing the first two numbers in the problem and guessing an operation based on a keyword ("left" means subtract, "total" means add) without reading the whole story.
Why it happens: Keyword hunting works often enough in simple problems that kids default to it — until a problem breaks the pattern, like a "how many more" comparison problem that actually needs subtraction, not addition.
The fix: Always retell the story in your own words first (see the strategy above) before touching any numbers — the story tells you the operation, not any single word in it.
